Samdo (Three Paths)
These stone-paved paths, Samdo (Three Paths) were built for the spirits and participants in the royal ancestral rites, the reigning monarch and the heir apparent, and their ancestors whose spirits are being invoked to be honored at the rite. Of the three, the middle way is called Sillo (Sacred Path) designed to guide the spirits from the main entrance of Jongmyo Shrine to Jeongjeon Hall (Main Hall) where the rite took place; the two sideways, used by the king (east side) and the heir apparent (west side), end at Eojaesil Chamber (King's Lodge) where they stayed during the event. All other participants were not allowed to intrude Samdo. Instead, they used the road beside these three paths.
